The area where the village of Espiche is located was inhabited during Roman times, and evidence of a dam from that period was found next to the road to Barão de São João, which was destroyed during the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. [4] Archaeological remains have also been found at the point where National Road 125 passes through Espiche. [5]

The village has existed since at least the eighteenth century, having been mentioned in the Parish Memoir that was drawn up after the 1755 earthquake: «there are in this parish two very old Chapels outside the two towns with an evocation of Our Lady of the Incarnation, almost joining the so-called village of Espiche to the other in a Cabeço de Serro Redondo in front of the Parish Church apart from the South and next to a beach, with the invocation of St. Stephen, they were demolished by the earthquake, they do not belong to any Patron Saint, nor does it have more income than the devotion of the customers."

During the period of great expansion of the canning industry in the city of Lagos, in the first half of the twentieth century, many of the workers came from remote villages, such as Praia da Luz and Espiche. [7] In February 1976, work began on the construction of Bairro Liberdade.
In the 2010s, a bio-healthy park was installed, aimed at stimulating the practice of sports, as part of a program of the Municipality of Lagos to install various equipment of this type in the municipality.
