The city of Silves was once the capital of the Algarve and ceased to be so when the silting of the Arade River occurred. But this was not the only moment in history in which Silves had a fundamental preponderance in the region. In Moorish times, Silves was an important governmental, mercantile and cultural centre and extended its influence throughout the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

There are many Islamic vestiges in Silves and they are very well documented and preserved in its museums and cultural centers that are, without a doubt, worth a visit.
