Parchal is a Portuguese village that was the seat of the extinct Parish of Parchal in the Municipality of Lagoa, a parish with an area of 3.86 km² and 4019 inhabitants (2011), with a population density of 893.1 h/km².
The Parish of Parchal was created on June 20, 1997, by disaggregation of the then parish of Estômbar, and was extinguished in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, to, together with Estômbar, form a new parish called União das Freguesias de Estômbar e Parchal with its headquarters in Estômbar.
The village of Parchal was elevated to the category of village on July 12, 2001.
This village serves as Portimão's "dormitory city", since a large part of the city's working population moves away from the large metropolis, choosing the neighboring lands to live. Parchal, due to its close proximity to Portimão, was one of the parishes elected, greatly multiplying its expansion since the 25th of April.

Your Story:
Located on the left bank of the Arade River and detached from Estômbar on June 20, 1997, the parish of Parchal is the most recent in the municipality of Lagoa, extending over an area of 4.5 square kilometers.

The toponym Parchal seems to derive from Parchel or Praxel, the name that designated the old Franciscan convent located in the neighboring village of Calvário, in the parish of Estômbar. The word Praxel, which comes from Arabic, means a flooded or swampy place, precisely as the lands of Parchal were in their origins, constantly invaded by the tides of the Arade River. But before the current name, it was also known as Aldeia dos Cucos, in a popular reference to the Cuco family, one of the first to settle in Parchal.

Rudimentary and family agriculture first, and fishing and canning industry later, were the poles of attraction for the creation of a first housing nucleus located in front of Portimão and connected to this city by the then new bridge over the Arade River. At the height of the fishing activity and the canning industry, several factories were installed in the territory that currently corresponds to the parish, which represented employment and attracted more and more people to the place. When in the mid-70s, the canning industry went into decline, Parchal was already a consolidated residential space, with a strong connection to Portimão, where a considerable part of its population carried out activities related to fishing, commerce and services.

Meanwhile, the April Revolution of 1974 brought new winds, new perspectives and demands, among them, the right to decent housing and according to the needs of families. As a result, a group of Parchal brought to Parchal, a nucleus of the then created in Lagoa, Cooperativa de Habitação Económica Lagoense, which would play a fundamental role in the urban and economic development that Parchal knows today.

The creation of the parish in June 1997 and the elevation to the category of village in April 2001 were the fair recognition of the extraordinary development and all the potentialities and perspectives that open up to Parchal.
