Praia do Vau is an ocean beach in the municipality of Portimão, in the Algarve, Portugal. It has a sandy beach flanked by gentle cliffs. It is a beach with tranquility, being known for its iodine and the clay of the cliffs, and also for the irregular rock formations
Sheltered between cliffs of coppery tones, Praia do Vau has a small but very beautiful beach, in which the tranquil sea completes the perfect scenery to rest.
Very busy during the summer, the village next to the beach has a lot of animation and restaurants where you can taste delicious dishes of fresh fish.
The ochre and red cliffs that mark the ends of the beach lower until they are interrupted in the central section of the beach. To the interior there are several tourist facilities and the urbanizations of the Vau with its garden areas.
Much of the vegetation around the beach is exotic (piteira, chorão and cacti), having been introduced in a vain attempt to stabilize these cliffs, extremely vulnerable to the contact of rainwater and the sea.
Already in the
limits of the beach, in the direction of Barranco das Canas or Praia dos Careanos, the cliff rises and is covered by the typical vegetation, especially barrilha and salgadeira, species resistant to the maritime winds loaded with salt.
The rocky walls, much sculpted by erosion, form nooks that delight bathers. In the cliffs of the surrounding beach it is possible to access breathtaking views of this coast, especially over Ponta João d'Arens, and observe the karst modelling of the rock formations.
