The city of Silves was once the capital of the Algarve and ceased to be so when the silting of the Arade River occurred. But this was not the only moment in history when Silves had a fundamental preponderance in the region. In the time of the Moors, Silves was an important governmental, mercantile and cultural center and extended its influence throughout the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

In Silves, it is possible to get to know an Algarve full of history, culture and authenticity.

Another curious detail of this city is the existence, in the vicinity, of a reddish rock, the famous Silves Stoneware, a rock that was used in the construction of its castle that, for this very reason, has red tones that gives it a very peculiar and different aspect from the other castles of Portugal.

In Silves there is a lot to discover. One of them is the Old Bridge over the Arade River, which today has only pedestrian access. Despite its name, the ancient viaduct is probably of medieval origin. The Castle of Silves, built between the ninth and twelfth centuries, is not only the emblematic monument of the city, but one of the most important buildings of the times of the Arab occupation in the entire Algarve. Its walls and battlements are built with red stoneware from Silves. Already in 1910, the Castle of Silves was classified as a National Monument.
