The ochre and reddish cliffs that mark out the ends of the beach are lowered until they are interrupted in the central stretch of sand. Inland there are several tourist facilities and the Vau housing developments with their gardened areas. Much of the vegetation around the beach is exotic (pythia, weeping willows and cacti), having been introduced in a vain attempt to stabilize these cliffs, which are extremely vulnerable to contact with rainwater and the sea.
At the limits of the beach, in the direction of Barranco das Canas or Praia dos Careanos, the cliff rises and is covered by typical vegetation, mainly wormleaf saltwort and sea orach, species resistant to the sea winds laden with salt. The rocky walls, very sculpted by erosion, form nooks and crannies that delight bathers. From the cliffs surrounding the beach, it is possible to access breathtaking views over this coastline, especially over Ponta João d'Arens, and observe the karstic modeling of the rock formations.
