Sheltered between cliffs of coppery tones, Praia do Vau has a small but very beautiful sandy beach, where the calm sea completes the perfect scenario for resting.
Very busy during the summer, the village next to the beach is lively and has restaurants where you can enjoy delicious fresh fish dishes.
The ochre and reddish cliffs that mark the ends of the beach drop down to a halt in the central stretch of sand. Inland, there are various tourist facilities and the Vau housing developments with their landscaped areas.
Much of the vegetation around the beach is exotic (pythia, weeping willows and cacti), having been introduced in a vain attempt to stabilise these cliffs, which are extremely vulnerable to contact with rainwater and the sea.
At the limits of the beach, in the direction of Barranco das Canas or Praia dos Careanos, the cliff rises and is covered with typical vegetation, mainly wormleaf saltwort and sea orach, species that are resistant to the salt-laden sea winds. The rocky walls, sculpted by erosion, form nooks and crannies that delight bathers.
From the cliffs around the beach, you can enjoy breathtaking views over this coastline, especially over Ponta João d'Arens, and observe the karstic modelling of the rock formations.
